How to Get a Fast Computer

So your once trusty and reliable computer that was fast and error-free is now slow and buggy. You turn on your PC and it takes more than 5 minutes for it to boot up. You start Microsoft Word and minutes later it is still loading or your surfing the internet and the screen freezes and stalls forcing you to turn it off and back on again.
Believe it or not, the above is more common than not. AS time goes by, your computer gets full of programs, applications, spyware, malware, and becomes loaded down with software that mostly is not needed. Below are three things that you can do right now to speed up your PC and make it a blazing fast computer!

The first thing you can do is clean out your hard drive. Go through and organize your files, music, media, movies, etc... Just like you clean your office and clutter can make you less efficient. Organize your files and deleting the ones you no longer need can free up dome extra space. For the big files mostly media, store them on a separate CD which can save you lots of space.

Then after you organize your files you need to defrag your hard drive. This can be done through the Start Menu >> Accessories >> System tools. Then from there pick disk Defragmenter. Defragging your hard drive will organize your files that are written and group them together to make it easy for your PC to find and use it.

Second you should run weekly spyware and virus scans. Spyware can wreak havoc on your internet speed and viruses can literally disable your computer. Spyware is mostly put on your computer without you even knowing it. When you visit certain websites they will put what is called a 'cookie' on your computer to track what kind of sites you visit and to gather statistics. Every time you close out internet explorer you can delete the cookies and temporary files. This will definitely give you more speed when surfing the internet. There are a handful of free programs to sort out spyware as well as anti-virus programs to guard your PC from any attacks.

Last, but not least you should periodically clean your registry. Your windows registry is the command center of your computer and everything that runs, first passes through here. A corrupt and bloated registry will make a fast computer a slow one. It can also accumulate corrupt entries and invalid ones. This is often caused by installing programs and uninstalling them. Every time you do this is marks an entry on the registry and then deletes it. Manually trying to clean your registry can be slightly tricky and it is recommended you invest in a good registry cleaner.

There are a handful of registry cleaners out there, but you will want to invest in a solid one. Many offer free scans to show you the potential threats that my affect your computer speed. Take advantage of this and run the free scan. You may be surprised in what you find!

How to Completely Clean Computer Files From Hard Drive

voteBest Way to Clean Computer Files From Hard Drive.
Want to know the only way to clean computer files from your hard drive permanently? You might think that manually cleaning files off your hard drive will erase them forever. But just because you clicked the delete button and cannot find that file does not mean it doesn't still exist somewhere on your hard drive. In actuality, even a novice with the right software can dig up those old deleted files and have complete access to them. Spammers and thieves want that information about you so it is important to take every step to stop them.

Do you think you may be at risk Do you already have a software program to clean computer files or information of a sensitive nature? This is a necessity if you want to be kept safe from the perpetual attacks spammers make on computers every day.

Boat loads of information are in a hard drive that you will more than likely never even know exists. Data from every key you have ever pressed, every chat log, every deleted email, and even old documents you thought were long gone are still embedded on your hard disk. You may not even realize how to tell what is on your hard drive, but it's the people that do know that present the problem. These deleted files are not as deleted as they may seem once someone uses the right software to access them.

Have you tried to delete the internet browsing history? Well that browsing history is still there, along with every website you have ever visited and what you clicked on. You may think it's all been deleted but unless you get a hard drive cleaning program you will not be able to hide from those who want your personal information.

How about my financial data?

There was a study done on old abandoned hard drives and out of 100 hard drives they were able to dig up over 4,000 credit card numbers. The owners of these hard drives had erased the information but had not used any special software to prevent data recovery. This is why neglecting to permanently erase private files from your computer can be devastating. Spammers know that a lot of people are not aware of this and will take full advantage of it.

You have to make sure that when you delete a file it can never come back to haunt you and is permanently deleted forever. With all the attacks from malware and spyware it is even more important to protect the files that are already on your computer by cleaning computer files for good.

The only way to completely clean computer files on your hard drive is to use hard drive cleaner software.

Virus Or Spyware - What's The Difference?

This month's article is one of the things I still find comes up as a frequent question, "what's the difference between Viruses and Spyware"? I will try and clarify that here.

One of the biggest slowdowns of a PC is caused by viruses, adware or spyware as it's often called. Before you can benefit from any other optimisation tips or improvements you really need a system relatively free from those pests.

A virus is a piece of malicious software code written to cause some kind of damage to a computer system or network or even the Internet itself. Viruses spread, similar to their biological namesake, from one machine to another and can spread havoc wherever they go. They are most commonly spread by sharing files with others or through email attachments where they can be set up to send themselves to all the addresses in your email address book.

Adware is usually downloaded and installed along with some other program without your knowledge and unlike a virus doesn't spread by itself. Very often you click "OK" without reading the terms and conditions and by doing so you agree to have the files installed. An example is you see a "free" program on offer that you think might be useful and download it without thinking. Even some anti-spyware programs install adware and the website earns money from the ads that are clicked on.

The catch is that the extra files introduced are used to determine things like your surfing habits nd the data is used to serve up popup ads or redirect your browser to a page other than the one you wanted.

Some of the programs can be used to install keyloggers which can send back information about passwords and bank details etc. Adware is not a security problem it is more an annoyance especially when you have ten different programs trying show ads. The amount of computer resources it uses up slows your system to a crawl.

Spyware is more malicious and evil intentioned and is designed to steal something from you. It can be downloaded by visiting the wrong types of websites or along with other files the same way as adware. Spyware can often be hard to remove as it can continually recreate itself and hide somewhere on your hard drive.

Programs such as trojans can be used to allow access to hackers at a later date. From the story of the Trojan horse where the Greeks hid inside the wooden horse left as a peace offering and were wheeled in to the fort by the Trojans themselves. Then at night the Greeks crept out of the horse and opened the gates and let the enemy in. Trojans and adware unlike viruses don't spread themselves.

It is wise to run more than one spyware checker as no one system gets rid of them all. You can never be certain you have every one removed because new ones may not have been discovered and the Spyware program doesn't recognise it yet. I use the two free ones "Spybot" and "Adaware" and I also use CounterSpy which comes from a reputable company that specialises in removing spyware.

Sometimes people say to me "doesn't my anti-virus software remove spyware"? Well the answer is,
most don't and even if it does I always find a specialist product works best. Beware also of bogus spyware scanners available on-line which actually install their own spyware once they have removed their competitors.

Sometimes you run a free scan and it finds all sorts of nasties but you will have to sign up and pay
to remove them. I have even seen it that they find things that don't exist or try to frighten people into believing they have lots of spyware when all they have are advertising cookies.

Cookies are small text files that websites leave on your system so that when you return they can customise the page that loads or they can count you as a returning visitor. They are harmless and most of them are useful. They can be easily removed by deleting them in your browser settings.

So you need to be running a suitable and up to date antivirus program and one or more Spyware checkers.

Spyware - Definitions & Explainations

What do I have for you today? I thought I’d talk about Spyware. Many people confuse spyware with a virus, and virus’ or (virii) with spyware. While many have overlapping areas, generally they are two distinct categories

Spyware removers such as Adaware and Spybot Search & Destroy break the Spyware & Adware down into categories; these categories are then used in a threat assessment after the scan is run. I’ll include some typical categories and a short description of each

Adware
This is designed to display advertising to the user that the user may not be aware of or want to see. Most often this form of Adware is included in freeware bundles or as additional (and/or required) content with shareware. Adware is generally relatively harmless, and more of a nuisance than a danger to you computer, if you remove some forms of Adware from your system, certain programs you have downloaded (the ones that brought the Adware on your system) may stop functioning. Your choice then is to put up with the Adware or usually pay for an ‘Ad free’ version of that program

Annoying Ware?
This is Adware that causes multitudes of pop ups and assorted hard to stop windows and this is forcing you to put up with adverts you don’t want. This also will slow your system down and drive you mad trying to close all the windows etc and as soon as you close one another pops up. Annoying to the extreme!

Data Mining
This is an application that companies that supply software and games etc, designed to collect information about the user and does so aggressively. This data is then often stored on your system to be transmitted without detection next time you use that piece of software from the company. The data then is used to provide demographics, targeted advertising and in some cases even personal data

Dialer
The application is designed to change the user's Dial Up Networking settings to dial numbers that the user does not know about, to connect to a number in stealth, and/or to avoid being detected by the user such as dialling expensive connections where the user has not authorized the connection.

Hijacker
These applications are designed to hijack the user's home page, HOSTS file, browser favourites, chosen search engine, and/or system settings.

Exploit
The application employs the use of a software or system exploit to install and/or operate.

Malware
These are malicious software designed to do harm to a user's system or to other systems that is not specifically a VIRUS.

Monitoring Tool
This category includes remote access Trojans (RATs), Root Kits, etc.

MRU
This is a listing of the Most Recently Used lists stored in your registry. They are harmless and consist only of things such as the most recent document you opened.

With the exception of those who are competing in reality TV shows, who wants to be watched? Who wants to be seen in their most vulnerable and private moments? Who wants to be deprived of his privacy and his freedom to keep things for himself? Most importantly, who wants to jeopardize his security by unwittingly exposing the things he should be keeping a secret to someone who’s watching from afar?

Before you start thinking that we’re referring to a psychopathic voyeur who is observing you from the building adjacent to your house, let us clarify that we’re going to discuss about spyware. Yes. Spyware: a program which has been the bane to Internet users for the past three years.

Spyware is one of those things that were invented for a good purpose, but was eventually exploited in time. Spyware was originally meant as a tool that would allow you to monitor the usage of your PC terminal while you’re away from the keyboard so that you can prevent illegal access to the same. Eventually, it found other borderline uses, like catching a cheating spouse or significant other, prying on your daughter’s liaisons, and watching over your children’s Internet activities from a remote computer.

From pure to gray to black, spyware has now become a backdoor to high technology security protocols. It does this without hacking any system, rather, by deluding a user into unwittingly installing the spyware program on his PC. From there, the program would work invisibly, sending key logs, or log files of the characters you have punched on your keyboard, to someone else on a remote terminal. This is why spyware is also called as a key logger program.

Eventually, spyware evolved into more damaging forms. Today, you would have invisible scripts redirecting you to certain websites which you have not chosen to view, or pop-ups that keep sprouting left and right even if you’re viewing a pop-up free website. This has led the Anti-Spyware Coalition, a group of industry giants who are adversely affected by this digital malady as well, to define spyware as something that “impairs users control over material changes that affect their user experience, privacy or system security; use of their system resources, including what programs are installed on their computers; or collection, use and distribution of their personal or otherwise sensitive information.”

The security risks posed by spyware programs cannot be ignored. Imagine engaging in an online transaction wherein you send your credit card details in a secured network, only to stand losing such details once you log off as your key logs would be sent to someone else. Also, personal details can also be stolen, resulting into a greater risk for your actual safety.

But it is the violation of your rights that is the biggest issue. With spyware, your freedom of choice and to feel secure about your personal effects is deprived of you. This has no room in a civilized society.

Indeed, spyware is a modern day disease that should be curbed. It now comes in a variety of forms aside from the aforementioned key loggers:

• ADWARE – is an invisible program that sends specific banners for you to see. It may sound innocent, but this program actually compels your PC to send personal details to the mother source so that the latter may know which ads to display. Get a free trial spyware remover here: http://eauthorresources.com/naw.htm

• HIJACKERS – these are programs that take control of your browsers, opening up pages which you do not choose to view.

• MALWARE – these are programs which are not spyware per se, but operate under the same principle. They are persistent scripts that don’t seem to stop until your data are destroyed. Examples of these programs are Trojans and worm viruses.

There are a lot of free tools in the World Wide Web that would allow you to rid your computer of these malicious programs. Sometimes, however, the process of cleaning up results in the loss of valuable files. The maxim “an ounce of prevention is worth more than a pound of cure” seems to be the best policy against spyware. Always update your anti-virus system, so that spyware may not be allowed to incubate in your hard drive.

Rid Your Computer Of Spyware

Everyone seems to be asking these days: why is my computer so slow? Well, the answer to that question is usually that it’s loaded with programs called spyware and adware. Spyware and adware are programs installed, usually without your permission, on your computer so companies can show their advertisements, log what sites you visit so they know what products you’re interested in and record keystrokes on your computer so they know what you’re talking about. Below are 3 easy steps to take to start protecting and eliminating your spyware and adware problem on your home computer.

First, stop using Internet Explorer! I know you may be shocked, but Microsoft’s internet browser has more holes in it than Swiss cheese! The best alternative is Mozilla’s Firefox, available for free download at Mozilla.org. After installing the browser, it will automatically transfer your bookmarks/favorites and settings over to Firefox. Also, please make sure Firefox is your default browser. Using Firefox will reduce the amount of spyware and adware on your computer by 75%.

Secondly, download these two free programs: Spybot (safer-networking.org/en/index.html) and Ad-Aware (lavasoftusa.com/software/adaware/). These two free programs will search throughout your computer, find the spyware and adware and allow you to quarantine and delete it. To be completely safe, be sure to run and update both of these programs twice a week. This will get rid of all spyware and adware currently on your computer and bring your protection level up to 95%.

Finally, be sure to use a firewall. A firewall is just what it sounds like, a “wall” between your internet connection and your computer. If you have a high speed broadband connection, a firewall is a must. Most Windows XP systems have a built in firewall that you can simply enable (check Microsoft’s help files if you don’t know how) but if you’re looking for more protection but don’t want to pay, simply download Zone Alarm’s free firewall at tinyurl.com/7cn6a . Zone alarm’s firewall may take awhile to configure, but it is worth it in the long run. With a properly configured firewall, your protection level is now at 100%.

Good luck and be safe!

3 Tips To Remove Spyware From Your Computer For Free

Your computer is the portal to the Internet. It allows you to speak to friends via email or instant messenger, to play games on or even to educate you or your children. However your computer is at risk the minute you browse on the Internet. All kinds of nasty files from spyware, adware, malware to computer viruses which are lurking to attack your computer, all without your knowledge. I am going to give you three easy to follow tips that will enable you to repel and remove spyware infections from your computer.
Tip No.1 - My first tip is to practice safe browsing techniques. This sounds obvious, although it is tempting to visit those sites that offer downloads and goodies for free. Most of the time they come with a price, infected files within the download itself.
So to prevent spyware files from being downloaded onto your computer in the first place, do only download legitimate files or programs from safe and trusted websites. If you are unsure then ensure you have the latest browser installed on your computer. Preferably you should be using Firefox as this can warn you if you are visiting a potentially 'dodgy' website.
Tip No.2 - You should ensure that you have an anti-spyware program that has an online guard contained within. Anti-spyware programs that remove spyware are great at removing infections, but that is all they can do remove after the infections has occurred.
The best way to combat spyware is to limit the amount of infectious files that will be able to infiltrate your computer. As this article is to help you remove spyware for free, then I can recommend two products at the time of writing this. The first program is Spyware Doctor. The free version does have a decent online guard. [The paid for version is slightly better, but the free version is a very good product in its own right]. The second program is Spyware Terminator. You will only need one of them not both.
Tip No.3 - My final tip is to run a regular scan of your computer with whatever anti-spyware program you use. Ensure that you also regularly update your anti-spyware program for the latest file definitions so the anti-spyware program can find the latest spyware that is released to attack your computer.
How regular you run your anti-spyware program is based on how much you use your computer. Once a week is fine if you use your computer frequently but to not to excess. Personally I run a scan every 2 days as I do use my computer every day. My computer is pretty clean.
Unless you are using a Macintosh or Linux based machine, it is near impossible to stop spyware from infecting your computer. However, by following the above tips you can reduce the amount of infectious spyware files get through your computer defences and cause you too much havoc.

Internet Security Free Download from Google

Finding a decent, reliable internet security free download for you home computer used to be quite a challenging task. None of the software was from brand names you would recognize and to find a decent solution would require significant time researching – reading computer forum posts and reviews on CNet downloads. Most home users did not have the knowledge or patience to invest the time in selecting a good product.
At the 2006 the situation changed when Google introduced “Google Pack.” Google Pack is a collection of over 10 free software programs. Included within Google Pack was 2 internet security downloads – an antivirus and an anti spyware program. The only program really missing to make this a complete internet security free download is firewall software.
Nobody really knows why Google did not include firewall software however there are a number of possible of explanations. In the more advanced routers a solid firewall is often included within the hardware which means firewall software is not needed. Microsoft included firewall software within Windows XP SP2 for free. The Microsoft solution is not the best as it does not monitor outgoing traffic from your PC to the internet. I use and recommend the free ZoneAlarm firewall software for home users.
The internet security software included within Google Pack is of high quality and is provided by some of the leading security software vendors in the industry. The anti virus software is provided by Symantec who make the Norton AntiVirus range of products. The Norton AntiVirus products are considered one of the best on the market and frequently score highly in independent tests. The version included within Google Pack is called “Norton Security Scan.” Despite its name the product both scans and removes virus issues and is based on the award-winning Norton AntiVirus products.
The anti spyware software is provided by a company called PC Tools. PC Tools makes the leading spyware removal software called Spyware Doctor. Spyware Doctor continuously receives recommendations from leading PC Publications and has won numerous awards. Within Google Pack you will find Spyware Doctor Starter Edition which is contains the same spyware scanning and removal capabilities of the full version.
Given the quality of the software in Google Pack I recommend it as a top internet security free download choice. To make your computer’s security complete all you need to add is the free ZoneAlarm firewall download.

New forms of malicious Spyware and Adware are constantly created and in order to protect your computer from infestations you must choose a high-quality program and keep it updated.

Spyware Protection - Free Scans, Are They Worth The Effort

You're proud of yourself. You installed the latest and greatest antivirus software when you bought your last computer, and you've kept it current with the latest virus definitions. You have your operating system set to auto-update and install all the new security patches. You're careful about what you download and have your anti-virus program set to scan files before they're actually saved to your hard drive.

But suddenly your computer seems sluggish. It's slow to boot, and takes a long time to open or save files. You notice the home page in your browser has changed, but you don't remember changing it. You think you spot a new icon in the system tray, but can't remember if it was there or not. You suspect a virus, but run a scan of your entire system and it shows as clean.

What could be the problem?

Spyware!

Spyware can be installed on your computer without your knowledge, and can result in a number of computer performance issues. Spyware is designed to monitor or control your computer use. It can be used to monitor your web surfing, redirect your browser to particular websites, send pop-up ads, or record your keystrokes, which can ultimately lead to identity theft.

The key to protecting yourself from spyware is to learn how to recognize it, avoid it, and remove it from your computer. All computer users should take the time to implement prevention measures against spyware infection, educate themselves to recognize indicators that their system has been infected, and learn what actions are necessary to eradicate spyware from an infected machine.

Indicators of a spyware infection include:

- An unusually high number of pop-ups
- Your browser goes to sites different than where you tell it to go
- A new toolbar appears on your browser
- New icons appear on your desktop or on the system tray
- Keys suddenly don't work
- The appearance of seemingly random error messages
- Computer boots slower than usual
- Computer seems slow when saving files or starting programs

Fortunately there are steps you can take to drastically reduce your risk of a spyware infection. Those steps include:

Keep your operating system and web browser current. Spyware can exploit security holes in these programs. Software companies issue free "patches" to plug those holes as they're discovered. If there is an auto-update feature for your operating system and browser, make sure you have activated that feature to automatically check for and install those updates. It is also a good idea to check for updates manually, even when you have your system set to auto update.

Use both anti-spyware and anti-virus software, set up a firewall, and keep them current. Most anti-virus software doesn't detect spyware, and if it does it generally doesn't do nearly as good of a job as a standalone anti-spyware program. Make sure you have both types of programs installed on your computer, and that the programs check for and install updates daily.

Be cautious of free downloads. It's fun to download free games, screen savers, file-sharing applications, and toolbars. But it's also important to understand that some of these free software programs may also infect your system with spyware. If children share your computer, make sure you instruct them not to download programs without your permission.

Know exactly what you're installing before you install it. End-user license agreements (EULA) contain important information about programs and what they do. Be sure and read the EULA before installing any software, and if a particular program doesn't have a EULA, or it is hard to find, carefully consider whether you are comfortable risking infection of your system.

Minimize unapproved downloads. If the security settings on your browser are low, you leave yourself succeptible to receiving downloads that you aren't aware of. Ensure your browser security settings are high enough to detect these. Internet Explorer should be set to the "Medium" setting at a minimum.

Don't click on pop-up links. Click the red "X" icon to close pop-ups. Clicking anything within the pop-up window (such as a cancel button) might install spyware on your computer.

Install a firewall. A firewall will block outside access to your system and will alert you in the event spyware already installed on your computer is sending information to unauthorized users.

Back up your data. You have important information stored on your computer. Make a back up copy of everything you would like to have in the event your computer crashes. Do this often.

If you suspect your computer might be infected with spyware, immediately cease any activity that involves credit cards, bank accounts, user names, passwords, or other information that may compromise you personally. Check to ensure your security software is active with the most current updates, and scan your entire system for both spyware and viruses. Remove or quarantine anything detected as malicious.

Dealing With Spyware

No matter if you are an amateur just getting acquainted to using your computer or an experienced computer user, we all have to deal with the annoyances of spyware and/or malware. Personally, I have been using a computer for many years and it’s really a shame that we should have to even deal with this type of problem at all. For many years now, marketing companies have been taking advantage of us by writing programs and sneaking them into software downloads without our permission so they can force us to view there advertisements for products.

Unfortunately, not only do we have to deal with looking at these uninvited advertisements, they actually slow down the way our computer runs causing our screens just to freeze up in the middle of doing something important, or how about when your in the middle of playing your favorite online game and wham your computer just reboots for no apparent reason. Sound familiar? Sure, it does and 99% of the time, it’s because you have been plagued, again, with some type of spyware or malware. Lawmakers are recognizing the problems and the invasion of privacy that these marketing companies are causing and are working on laws to make them outlawed, but until that day comes the best we can do is educate ourselves about PC security and how to protect and remove spyware from our computer systems.

The first thing you need to know about PC security, is spyware and malware are contracted in many ways, and has many names as well. Adware displays web-based advertisements through pop-up windows or through annoying advertising banners. Many alter your browser settings or change your default home page to point to some other site and they are capable of sending personal information to third-parties called Hijackers. Keyloggers can store information, which could very well include personal details and passwords that you have typed into your computer, such that it can later be retrieved by third-parties. Then, there are others called Dialers, which connect you to long-distance or toll numbers without your consent, resulting in expensive phone bills. The list goes on, as you can even get spyware just by visiting a webpage and the best way to stop this is with good PC security.

Spyware developers are sneaky and they design these bugs to get around firewalls and yes, even virus software, as well. Don’t be fooled, nothing is full proof from spyware and other programs like it because new ones are written all the time, just like software is designed to rid you of these un-welcome guests. While you can remove them manually you may spend hours hunting them down in your PC and chances are you will miss parts of the spyware programs or even damage your windows software causing you more hours by having to reinstall your system all over again. Personally, I use a spyware remover and run it at least every other day as part of my PC security protection. If you are like me, you have tried several, but, I like Spyware Nuker , it is easy to install, use and it stays up to date with all the latest new definitions for combating and protecting your pc from Phishing , Popups, Spyware, Adware, Spyware Trojans, Hijackers, Keyloggers and others as well. Therefore, you might want to check it out as it also has won several awards.

Spyware - Eradicate It Now

Spyware removal has become a tedious work. As the spyware threat has worsened, a number of techniques have emerged to counteract it. Among these are

• programs designed to remove or to block spyware
• educating the users in such a way that spyware removal no longer is needed
• user practices which reduce the chance of getting spyware on a system.

Spyware remains a costly problem even with all new technology used to combat them. If a large number of spyware programs have infected a Windows computer, the only way to save the computer may be to back up user data, and fully reinstalling the operating system.

Anti-spyware programs

One of the markets most popular anti-spyware programs, Adwarealert will help you find and ultimately rid your computer of unwanted spyware software.

Many programmers and some commercial firms have released products designed to remove or block spyware. Steve Gibson's OptOut, , practially invented a growing category. Programs such as,

• Adwarealert
• Lavasoft's Ad-Aware SE
• Patrick Kolla's Spybot - Search & Destroy

rapidly gained popularity as effective tools to remove, and in some cases intercept, spyware programs.

Recently Microsoft bought the GIANT Anti-Spyware software, renaming it as Windows AntiSpyware beta and releasing it as a free download for Windows XP, Windows 2000, and Windows 2003 users. The renamed software for now exists as a time-limited beta test product that will expire at the end of July 2006. Microsoft is continuously developing and updating this product.

Antispyware protection, removal and antivirus

Major anti-virus firms such as Symantec, McAfee and Sophos have come later to the table, adding anti-spyware features to their existing anti-virus products.

In the beginning, anti-virus firms did not want to add anti-spyware functions, citing lawsuits brought by spyware authors against the authors of web sites and programs which described their products as "spyware".

However, recent versions of these major firm’s home and business anti-virus products do include anti-spyware functions. The spyware is treated differently from viruses though.

Symantec Anti-Virus, for instance, categorizes spyware programs as "extended threats" and now offers real-time protection from them (as it does for viruses). The drawback with these programs is that they are very complex and in many cases produce more hurdles to jump over then you as a user really need.

Like most anti-virus software, anti-spyware software requires a frequently-updated database of threats. As new spyware programs are released, anti-spyware developers discover and evaluate them, making "signatures" or "definitions" which allow the software to detect and remove the spyware.

If a spyware program is not blocked and manages to get itself installed, it may resist attempts to terminate or uninstall it. Some programs work together: when an anti-spyware scanner (or the user) terminates one running process, the other one starts up the killed program again, making it virtually impossible to clean the computer.

Some spyware will detect attempts to remove registry keys during the spyware removal and immediately add them again. Usually, booting the infected computer in safe mode allows an anti-spyware program a better chance of removing persistent spyware.

The most extreme way of cleaning is to move the hard drive to another computer, boot on the normal boot disk that computer has, and then clean the infected disk. You can also mount the infected disk over the local network and scan & clean it to remove as much spyware as possible.

It doesn’t matter what way you choose to clean your computer, but using a good spyware removal program will make your life much easier …

Spyware - Know Your Enemy

Spyware is a term that has become quite common to hear.

The term spyware refers to a broad category of malicious software designed to intercept or take partial control of a computer's operation without the “known” consent of that machine's owner or user. Spyware is as a term is being used quite loosely and includes a number of different programs. The thing they all have in common as spyware, is that they monitor the computer and/or user and share information with a third party. With or without the consent of the computer’s owner.

Semi spyware has become widely used and they manifest themselves as software, plugins or help files to other programs you want or need, and if you accept their policies and term of usage, you also accept the fact that these semi spyware programs will be installed and used.

They are normally not directly malicious as the secret spyware, but they do send out information from your computer to a third party. Most commonly some kind of habit tracing or statistics of surfing or similar. In most cases the information is completely anonymous and do not pose any kind of threat to you as an individual.

Spyware – a virus or not?

Spyware differs from viruses and worms in that it does not usually self-replicate. Like many recent viruses, however, spyware – by design – exploits infected computers for commercial gain.

Typical tactics furthering this goal include delivery of unsolicited pop-up advertisements; theft of personal information (including financial information such as credit card numbers); monitoring of Web-browsing activity for marketing purposes; or routing of HTTP requests to advertising sites.

These things are very hard to keep track of and know if a spyware is alive in your computer or if pop ups and other changes in your surfing programs behaviour should occur.

The only reliable way to know if an evil spyware is living and thriving inside your computer, is to install and use a good spyware removal program.

How does spyware infect?

Spyware does not spread like a computer virus or worm. Instead, spyware installs on your computer through deception or exploitation of software vulnerabilities.

Spyware Trojan horse!

A Trojan horse, by definition, smuggles in something dangerous in the guise of something desirable. So spyware often hide as an add on to some other program you really want.

Bundled Spyware

Spyware can also come bundled with shareware or other downloadable software, as well as music CDs. The user downloads a program (for instance, a music program or a file-trading utility) and installs it, and the installer additionally installs the spyware. Although the desirable software itself may do no harm, the bundled spyware does.

Manipulating Security Features

Another way of distributing spyware involves tricking users by manipulating security features designed to prevent unwanted installations. Internet browsers like Internet Explorer for example are easy targets t this method. Everybody has them and use them online almost daily. The way you protect yourself against this, is to always keep your operating system up to date when it comes to security updates.

Use Microsoft Update regularly (and often).

Examples of Spyware

As with computer viruses, researchers give names to spyware programs which frequently do not relate to any names that the spyware-writers use. Researchers may group programs into "families" based not on shared program code, but on common behaviours, or by "following the money" or apparent financial or business connections.

For instance, a number of the spyware programs distributed by Claria are collectively known as "Gator". Likewise, programs which are frequently installed together may be described as parts of the same spyware package, even if they function separately.

It is also important to know that different anti spyware program creators and big antivirus software creators may have different names for the save spyware. This can cause you to believe that you have 2 or more spyware products installed when you actually only have one, but mentioned with different names.

* CoolWebSearch, a group of programs, installs through the exploitation of Internet Explorer vulnerabilities. The programs direct traffic to advertisements on Web sites including coolwebsearch. To make this happen, they display pop-up ads, rewrite search engine results, and alter the infected computer's hosts file to direct DNS lookups to these sites.

* Internet Optimizer, also known as DyFuCa, redirects Internet Explorer error pages to advertising. When users follow a broken link or enter an erroneous URL, they see a page of advertisements. However, because password-protected Web sites (HTTP Basic authentication) use the same mechanism as HTTP errors, Internet Optimizer makes it impossible for the user to access password-protected sites.

* 180 Solutions transmits extensive information to advertisers about the Web sites which users visit. It also alters HTTP requests for affiliate advertisements linked from a Web site, so that the advertisements make unearned profit for the 180 Solutions company. It opens pop-up ads that cover over the Web sites of competing companies.

Toolbars from any other then the big players like Google, Yahoo, Msn and similar very often contains spyware to some degree today.

And even the big guns have started to incorporate “spyware like” statistics gather from their toolbars. They do tell you about them, and ask for your permission to install or active these routines. But they often do it in such a convoluted way, no one actually understand it.

So start out the day by cleaning your computer and then working. Make sure you have a restful safe day, download, scan and clean your computer from any spyware today …

What Is Spyware, Adware, Grayware and Malware? ------------

The Registry services as the stockroom of your computer. It contains all information about applications that were installed and uninstalled as well as hardware installation and deletion. The registry is full of data with reference to the settings that you have selected such as user profiles, the organization and configuration of your hardware, the drivers and a lot more. It is too here that the spyware simply enjoys staying as they are installed into your system. Altogether the more that they create your life, refined as they rumple the Registry. Destroy Your Data Or Else!

Safeguarding critical data has become more top of mind for most organizations as digital information has become the lifeblood of most businesses and institutions. The ability to access data anytime, anyplace in real time, is essential. Paradoxically, there does come a time when you must destroy your data to keep it safe.
Computers and storage devices eventually outlive their usefulness. For a small business, it might be a single PC every once and a while, but for a large enterprise, it could be several hundred computers that are discarded when it’s time to migrate upwards or when the lease expires. IT staff will also find themselves replacing desk-side and enterprise servers as storage capacities and processing capabilities evolve. These systems could also simply be warehoused and placed in a storage room to gather dust. Old computers are also often donated to charity, or can be auctioned off or sold to the general public at large, potentially with sensitive data still residing on the hard drives.
Whether discarded individually or en masse, it’s entirely possible these computers and servers still hold business data, unbeknownst to their new owners. Much of that data could be software applications and trivial information, but frequently the information left on these machines is extremely sensitive. Unless stringent steps are taken by users or IT staff, these hard drives will contain data and other sensitive information, whether customer, financial, health or medical records, or even information related to national security or government policy.
Data on computers, despite apparent loss due to natural disaster, equipment failure, human error or security breaches, is rather resilient. Data often thought irrevocably lost can be and is frequently retrieved by data recovery specialists.
You may have thought the data was deleted by the user of the PC or the IT department, but if it was deleted without special software that data will still reside on the hard drive of the discarded computer – easy prey for hackers.
To be truly effective, data removal procedures must go beyond the simple deletion of a file from the computer user’s desktop.
What many users don’t realize is that when most computers delete a file, the contents of the file are not actually removed from the hard drive: the digital file, made up of bits and bytes is still there, but it’s no longer linked to the file system. In essence, the page is in the book, but not in the table of contents. The actual data remains on the disk until the operating system re-uses those sectors to write new data. Even if you format a drive, that data is usually not erased, but the table of contents is merely wiped clean.
To make sure a file is permanently erased, it’s imperative the area of the disk where that file was stored is completely re-written with new data. Until then, it can be recovered by programs that read directly from the disk instead of through the operating system such as forensic software, commercially available data retrieval software, or manual data recovery techniques.
There are a number of ways to ensure the destruction or inaccessibility of data on hard drives: degaussing, over-writing, encryption and physical media destruction are some of the methods that have been employed to safeguard against the disclosure of sensitive information.
The wiping of sensitive data from a computer’s hard drive or a removable storage device is the best way to guarantee data can’t be reconstructed through laboratory techniques. Wiping is essential when hardware containing sensitive data is moved from a secure facility to be re-used in a non-secure environment.
Data destruction software can be inexpensive, easy to use for the average computer user, and readily available from a number of vendors. Data destruction software will usually securely erase a single file or group of files from a working hard drive.
A more drastic approach to data erasure is degaussing. This method often leaves hard drives completely inoperable, thus it can prevent computers from being recycled for educational use, charitable donation or resale to the general public.
A less extreme means of data erasure is the removal of sensitive data from storage devices in a manner that guarantees it can’t be reconstructed using normal system capabilities. This is an acceptable approach when the computer is being re-used within the same organization or department. For example, if the computer is simply being cleaned up for a new staff member taking over from a departing staff member, it is remaining in the same controlled environment.
Another method, clearing, can be accomplished by over-writing the entire system storage space or all sectors on the disk. A single re-write pass of a drive is usually sufficient to make sure that previous information cannot be retrieved.
It is important to remember the simple deletion of a file by the operating system only removes the directory pointers to the file; the digital information still resides on the computer’s hard drive until it is overwritten. Even re-formatting or re-partitioning a hard drive is not enough to guarantee the files are completely gone, even if the end user can’t see them anymore.
In extreme cases where the destruction of data must be guaranteed and the chance of retrieval must be eliminated, physical destruction of the hardware is the best course of action.
Media may generally be destroyed using a number of methods, including scraping by an abrasive substance directly on the magnetic disk or drum recording surface. Corrosive chemicals can have the same desired effect; however, the entire recording surface must be completely removed before disposal. Destruction of the drive (or the entire computer) can also be achieved by smelting, disintegration or incineration at a metal destruction facility. While making sure sensitive data does not fall into the wrong hands, it is equally important to make sure that data is no longer needed; if it is, make sure the data is safely backed up or archived elsewhere.
Destruction of data should be aligned with established, corporate departmental document-retention policy. If not, and you find yourself successful at cleansing your hard drive, you may also find yourself in need of a professional data recovery expert to undo your own handiwork.

Spyware - Why You Need To Know About It

Cost:
Enterprises spend an average of $130,000 a month in IT time fighting spyware related issues.(Source:NewDiligence) Dell estimates that twelve percent of its support calls involve spyware issues. And that doesn't even take into account the lost time of the employee facing the issue. If you're an individual or a corporation, you need to know about spyware because it costs you time and money. Who wants to spend money fighting this stuff when they could be making profits? And who wants to be cleaning up their computer when they could be lazing in the sun at home? I'm sure you don't. Cost should make you want to know about spyware. But even if it doesn't, the security issues should.
Security:
It is estimated that ninety percent of all PCs have thirty or more spyware programs running on them. That will slow down your machine for sure, but it could do more insidious harm. Spyware is increasingly being used by criminals. And their favorite type of theft is credit cards. This allows them to start purchasing on your name and reputation. And this type of activity isn't just the domain of the petty thief. Organized crime is now investing big dollars in getting at your bank accounts and credit cards.
Privacy:
Closely related to the above topic, spyware invades your privacy. Folks are intentionally trying to see where you go on the internet, who you send emails to, what you enter into forms, what documents you look at, etc. They try to collect information on who you are, what you like, and where you spend your money.
Performance:
This really is a no-brainer to anyone who has had spyware on their machine. Spyware can utterly destroy a computer. I have seen machines that no longer boot because of it. Network connections can be trashed. You don't want this headache.
The best medicine is prevention.
