It can be downloaded by visiting the wrong types of websites or along with other files the same way as adware. Spyware can often be hard to remove as it can continually recreate itself and hide somewhere on your hard drive.
Programs such as trojans can be used to allow access to hackers at a later date. From the story of the Trojan horse where the Greeks hid inside the wooden horse left as a peace offering and were wheeled in to the fort by the Trojans themselves. Then at night the Greeks crept out of the horse and opened the gates and let the enemy in. Trojans and adware unlike viruses don't spread themselves.
It is wise to run more than one spyware checker as no one system gets rid of them all. You can never be certain you have every one removed because new ones may not have been discovered and the Spyware program doesn't recognise it yet. I use the two free ones "Spybot" and "Adaware" and I also use CounterSpy which comes from a reputable company that specialises in removing spyware.
Sometimes people say to me "doesn't my anti-virus software remove spyware"? Well the answer is,
most don't and even if it does I always find a specialist product works best. Beware also of bogus spyware scanners available on-line which actually install their own spyware once they have removed their competitors.
Sometimes you run a free scan and it finds all sorts of nasties but you will have to sign up and pay
to remove them. I have even seen it that they find things that don't exist or try to frighten people into believing they have lots of spyware when all they have are advertising cookies.
Cookies are small text files that websites leave on your system so that when you return they can customise the page that loads or they can count you as a returning visitor. They are harmless and most of them are useful. They can be easily removed by deleting them in your browser settings.
So you need to be running a suitable and up to date antivirus program and one or more Spyware checkers.

What do I have for you today? I thought I’d talk about Spyware. Many people confuse spyware with a virus, and virus’ or (virii) with spyware. While many have overlapping areas, generally they are two distinct categories
Spyware removers such as Adaware and Spybot Search & Destroy break the Spyware & Adware down into categories; these categories are then used in a threat assessment after the scan is run. I’ll include some typical categories and a short description of each
Adware
This is designed to display advertising to the user that the user may not be aware of or want to see. Most often this form of Adware is included in freeware bundles or as additional (and/or required) content with shareware. Adware is generally relatively harmless, and more of a nuisance than a danger to you computer, if you remove some forms of Adware from your system, certain programs you have downloaded (the ones that brought the Adware on your system) may stop functioning. Your choice then is to put up with the Adware or usually pay for an ‘Ad free’ version of that program
Annoying Ware?
This is Adware that causes multitudes of pop ups and assorted hard to stop windows and this is forcing you to put up with adverts you don’t want. This also will slow your system down and drive you mad trying to close all the windows etc and as soon as you close one another pops up. Annoying to the extreme!
Data Mining
This is an application that companies that supply software and games etc, designed to collect information about the user and does so aggressively. This data is then often stored on your system to be transmitted without detection next time you use that piece of software from the company. The data then is used to provide demographics, targeted advertising and in some cases even personal data
Dialer
The application is designed to change the user's Dial Up Networking settings to dial numbers that the user does not know about, to connect to a number in stealth, and/or to avoid being detected by the user such as dialling expensive connections where the user has not authorized the connection.
Hijacker
These applications are designed to hijack the user's home page, HOSTS file, browser favourites, chosen search engine, and/or system settings.
Exploit
The application employs the use of a software or system exploit to install and/or operate.
Malware
These are malicious software designed to do harm to a user's system or to other systems that is not specifically a VIRUS.
Monitoring Tool
This category includes remote access Trojans (RATs), Root Kits, etc.
MRU
This is a listing of the Most Recently Used lists stored in your registry. They are harmless and consist only of things such as the most recent document you opened.

The Spy Who Robbed Me: What You Need To Know About Spyware
With the exception of those who are competing in reality TV shows, who wants to be watched? Who wants to be seen in their most vulnerable and private moments? Who wants to be deprived of his privacy and his freedom to keep things for himself? Most importantly, who wants to jeopardize his security by unwittingly exposing the things he should be keeping a secret to someone who’s watching from afar?
Before you start thinking that we’re referring to a psychopathic voyeur who is observing you from the building adjacent to your house, let us clarify that we’re going to discuss about spyware. Yes. Spyware: a program which has been the bane to Internet users for the past three years.
Spyware is one of those things that were invented for a good purpose, but was eventually exploited in time. Spyware was originally meant as a tool that would allow you to monitor the usage of your PC terminal while you’re away from the keyboard so that you can prevent illegal access to the same. Eventually, it found other borderline uses, like catching a cheating spouse or significant other, prying on your daughter’s liaisons, and watching over your children’s Internet activities from a remote computer.
From pure to gray to black, spyware has now become a backdoor to high technology security protocols. It does this without hacking any system, rather, by deluding a user into unwittingly installing the spyware program on his PC. From there, the program would work invisibly, sending key logs, or log files of the characters you have punched on your keyboard, to someone else on a remote terminal. This is why spyware is also called as a key logger program.
Eventually, spyware evolved into more damaging forms. Today, you would have invisible scripts redirecting you to certain websites which you have not chosen to view, or pop-ups that keep sprouting left and right even if you’re viewing a pop-up free website. This has led the Anti-Spyware Coalition, a group of industry giants who are adversely affected by this digital malady as well, to define spyware as something that “impairs users control over material changes that affect their user experience, privacy or system security; use of their system resources, including what programs are installed on their computers; or collection, use and distribution of their personal or otherwise sensitive information.”
The security risks posed by spyware programs cannot be ignored. Imagine engaging in an online transaction wherein you send your credit card details in a secured network, only to stand losing such details once you log off as your key logs would be sent to someone else. Also, personal details can also be stolen, resulting into a greater risk for your actual safety.
But it is the violation of your rights that is the biggest issue. With spyware, your freedom of choice and to feel secure about your personal effects is deprived of you. This has no room in a civilized society.
Indeed, spyware is a modern day disease that should be curbed. It now comes in a variety of forms aside from the aforementioned key loggers:

After installing the browser, it will automatically transfer your bookmarks/favorites and settings over to Firefox. Also, please make sure Firefox is your default browser. Using Firefox will reduce the amount of spyware and adware on your computer by 75%.
Secondly, download these two free programs: Spybot (safer-networking.org/en/index.html) and Ad-Aware (lavasoftusa.com/software/adaware/). These two free programs will search throughout your computer, find the spyware and adware and allow you to quarantine and delete it. To be completely safe, be sure to run and update both of these programs twice a week. This will get rid of all spyware and adware currently on your computer and bring your protection level up to 95%.
Finally, be sure to use a firewall. A firewall is just what it sounds like, a “wall” between your internet connection and your computer. If you have a high speed broadband connection, a firewall is a must. Most Windows XP systems have a built in firewall that you can simply enable (check Microsoft’s help files if you don’t know how) but if you’re looking for more protection but don’t want to pay, simply download Zone Alarm’s free firewall at tinyurl.com/7cn6a . Zone alarm’s firewall may take awhile to configure, but it is worth it in the long run. With a properly configured firewall, your protection level is now at 100%.
